VOTE TODAY…VOTE ALL YEAR
05.04.2010 // by: Michael
Many Chattanoogans mentioned voting on their Stand surveys as a way to get involved last summer. All in all, over 13% of respondents stated that they could contribute to helping the challenges Chattanooga faces by continuing or increasing their civic engagement. Here’s what a few people said:
• “I can vote in local elections (everyone MUST).”
• “I can VOTE. Just moved back to the area and I’m ready to take action.”
• “I can vote and take an active stand in participating to make Chattanooga the best it can be.”
• “VOTING in every election to help establish a city government run by people who care.”
In addition to these sort of general responses, we’ve noticed that Stand respondents are concerned with when to vote, how to vote, and in finding out the best ways to be part of the democratic process.
Well, this year is a good one to either start (or continue) getting involved in local elections:
Today is the Hamilton County primary: Hamilton County voters will be determining which County Commissioner candidates we would like to see on the August ballot from each party. Because Tennessee has an open primary system, anyone can vote regardless of whether or not you’re registered with a particular party. On the Hamilton County Election Commission’s website, you can find out which district you’re in, where to vote—and view a sample ballot for your location. The Times Free Press has also created an interactive voter guide and map that offers County Commissioner candidate bios by district.
August 5 is the county general election, as well as the primary for state and federal positions. This is when when we’ll vote in new School Board members and County Commissioners. We’ll also help to narrow down candidates for Tennesee Governor, and House and Senate Representatives, which will all be voted on in the November general election.
November 2 is the general election for state and national positions. Tennessee’s Third District Congressional seat represents 11 counties in East TN, including Hamilton County. For 15 years, this position has been held Zach Wamp. As Wamp will be running for Governor this year, this position is up for grabs—and the race is an exciting one that a lot of Chattanoogans are following closely.
