Seeing yellow, seeing Stand

Starting in May, the Chattanooga region will get inundated. Word is spreading about Stand, a cheery, yellow visioning campaign. We’re asking as many residents as possible to shout from the rooftops what they want for our region: in the four-question Stand survey, nothing is off-limits and no answers go unread.
We’re getting the word out anyway we can, via Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr for our area’s many social networkers. But since Stand is a movement by people, for people, we’re also asking anyone who can to take the survey to bowling pals, dinner dates, company shindigs, and knitting groups. Come out for our first Volunteer Training session to explore how you can plug in - Monday, May 18th at 6:30 PM at Stand HQ, 55 E Main Street, Suite 105.
We’ll be looking for answers through public utilities, through local companies and at events near and far. Keep your eyes open for yellow, and for our collective, bright future.
Open Doors, Open Conversations

Stand’s next planning meeting is Wednesday, May,13th at 4 PM. We’ll be meeting at Bluegrass Grille, two doors down from Stand HQ. The conversation is open to anyone who commits to being hopeful & helpful, part of & proud of Chattanooga.
From Chattarati’s recent article, “We Have a Vision for Chattanooga (Stand)”:
“With that [institutional] support, an initiative of Stand’s scale has the potential to fundamentally alter the political, economic, and cultural landscape of our region for years to come. It is absolutely essential for the public at large to have a deep understanding of its process and its influences. This need presents Stand with an incredible opportunity.”
An incredibly opportunity, indeed! Thanks for the healthy challenge, Chattarati. Much more to come…
Standing on Roots: Visioning and Revisioning in Chattanooga

You may be wondering, where did Stand come from? While the campaign was conceived of and launched by a group of local volunteers, it’s built on a legacy of visioning established by Chattanooga Venture, a not-for-profit organization that created and led Vision 2000, a goal-setting process with more than 1,700 local participants over a 20-week period in 1984.
The ideas generated were used to shape 40+ goals for the city to accomplish by the year 2000, supporting citizens’ emphasis on quality of life. Vision 2000 led to more than 200 projects and programs and a community investment of over $800 million from public and private funders.
Building on Vision 2000, ReVision 2000 was initiated in 1993 and drew 2,600 participants, resulting in 27 goals and 122 recommendations for the future.
And now, Stand revisions the revisioning process, with a greater emphasis on wide-spread involvement by residents from all corners of the Chattanooga region. Stand’s founding volunteers research best practices in recent community visioning processes across North America, including Portland’s “Vision PDX”, Calgary’s “imagineCALGARY”, Greenville’s “Plan-It Greenville” and Knoxville’s “Nine Counties. One Vision.”
And you are… who, exactly? We are Stand.

Stand is a community visioning effort for the Chattanooga region. But what does that really mean? How do we Stand, and where do we do it?
The effort starts with a four question survey. By answering these questions, you give voice to your own wishes for the community, but you also open a door for everyone else to share their ideas—be they “pie in the sky” or “foot on the ground.” Upon completing surveys, residents can share in the effort by volunteering to spread the word on Stand. You can administer surveys, bring a presentation to your place of work, or dedicate a blog post. Visit Stand’s Volunteer page for more ways to plug in, or visit Stand HQ, 55 E Main Street in downtown Chattanooga.
And once the region has answered the questions? The possibilities are endless. We don’t claim to know our neighbors’ needs and wants, but we do know that compiling dreams is the start of big things. When you give legs to an entire region’s people, they can use them to Stand. And together we will.
